---------- 1890 Trial Colors ----------

The American Bank Note Company submitted a selection of proposed colors shown on proofs of the stamps in use in late 1889 or early 1890. There were 60 of these proofs, 6 colors for each of the 10 denominations. The pages were numbered sequentially from 1 to 60.

Chestnut Brown

Indigo

Another choice was whether to continue with the current size of stamp or if it would be best to reduce the size. The options were printed on actual stamps of the plates in use at that time. The colors suggested for use if the larger size was retained were overprinted with the word "SAMPLE". The colors suggested for use if a smaller size stamp was adopted were overprinted "SAMPLE A".
